Jefferson Chalmers

In the southeast corner of Detroit, you’ll find the neighborhood of Jefferson Chalmers. It resides on the National Register of Historic Places, and was named a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2016. The area contains a number of significant buildings dating back to the 1920s and was once a thriving business district. Today, there are far fewer businesses, and on certain streets there are entire residential blocks with just one or two standing homes.
Like much of the city, there remains a sense of potential buried deep within the walls of what remains. As they say in restoration circles, “it’s got good bones” and just needs the right timing and funding to return to a bustling section of Detroit.
